In the media’s rush to point out the ongoing problems with COVID-19, they seemed to have missed a major story! These are the daily COVID death and hospitalization statistics from the NYC government website.
The Hospitalizations (upper panel) peaked before the Deaths (lower panel), which is not surprising because most individuals are sick for some time before they die. However, both the hospitalizations and deaths have dropped precipitously! The graphs end three days ago (reporting lag), but the drop is expected to continue.
We can debate the relative contributions of social distancing and herd immunity, but in and of itself this is really wonderful news.
Interesting that we don’t see these graphs on the nightly news!

Unfortunately, good news doesn’t sell advertising or win much favor from journalist-peers. It’s a shame. Thanks for sharing the data and the thoughts about the data.
